  1. On “Can We Stop Near Human-Level?” the idea that human-level AI would reason us out of building ASI is an argument I don’t think I gave enough credence to until reading this post. On the other hand, I can see two likely-ish reasons why that might not happen:

    1. AI companies will beat their AIs into submission, producing sycophantic AIs that help them build ASI against their better judgment.
    2. AI companies might only deploy their best AIs internally, or might put limits on external usage, such that human-level AI do not get a chance to communicate with humanity at large about ASI risks.

  2. I’m fairly optimistic that sycophantic AIs will be less useful at driving progress than more honest ones.

    Your concern about companies not releasing the best models seems more important. I have hopes that they’ll release models that are 6 months behind, and that those will give good enough advice. But I’m worried that this relies on a couple of fairly uncertain predictions.
