Peter McCluskey's Favorite Bay Area Hikes
Ordered by the time of year in which they are best done.
- Wilder Ranch coastal bluffs - early winter on a high surf, light wind day
- Phoenix Lake/Bald Hill north of Mt. Tam - mid winter
- Stinson Beach to Rock Springs and O'Rourke's Bench via the McKennan trail and Willow Camp or Matt Davis - clear days in February
- White Hill/Cascade Falls near Fairfax - late winter
- Mt. Diablo Donner Creek waterfalls (sometimes with a side trip to Mitchell Canyon to see the earliest Fairy Lanterns) - early spring
- Pacheco Falls (from Henry Coe's Coyote Creek entrance) - April
- Joseph Grant Park (ponds near the Hotel trail) - late April
- Murietta Falls - early May of a wet year
- Russian Ridge - early May of a dry year
- Henry Coe Frog Lake - May
- Henry Cowell (Big Rock Hole) - early June of a dry year
- Nisene Marks (Five Finger Falls) - when it's too warm for a sunny hike
- Pogonip to Wilder Ranch - early fall
- Palomarin trailhead to Bass Lake, Alamere Falls - early fall
- Sanborn And Castle Rock Parks (various rock outcroppings) - a clear day in early November when there's some fall foliage
- Chalk Mountain to Waddell Beach (one way from Whitehouse Road to Waddell) - clear late fall days
- Tomales Point - any clear calm day (the fall is the only time the weather has much chance of being good there, but I hope to get there sometime when the weather is good in May to see the flower).
