{"id":296,"date":"2009-08-02T08:27:25","date_gmt":"2009-08-02T16:27:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bayesianinvestor.com\/blog\/index.php\/2009\/08\/02\/more-on-the-flynn-effect\/"},"modified":"2015-10-13T13:50:01","modified_gmt":"2015-10-13T21:50:01","slug":"more-on-the-flynn-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bayesianinvestor.com\/blog\/index.php\/2009\/08\/02\/more-on-the-flynn-effect\/","title":{"rendered":"More on the Flynn Effect"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cscs.umich.edu\/~crshalizi\/reviews\/flynn-beyond\/\">This review by Cosma Shalizi<\/a> of James Flynn&#8217;s book <a href=\"https:\/\/bayesianinvestor.com\/blog\/index.php\/2007\/10\/08\/flynn-effect-explained\/\">What Is Intelligence?<\/a> provides some interesting criticisms of Flynn (while agreeing with much of what Flynn says).<\/p>\n<p>Shalizi&#8217;s most important argument is that Flynn and others who attach a good deal of importance to <b>g<\/b> haven&#8217;t made much of an argument that it measures a single phenomenon.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>After a century of IQ testing, there is still no theory which says which questions belongs on an intelligence test, just correlational analyses and tradition.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Flynn and others have good arguments that whatever <b>g<\/b> measures is important. But Shalizi leaves me with the impression that the only way to decide whether it&#8217;s a single phenomenon is to compare its usefulness to models which describe multiple flavors of intelligence. So far those attempts that I&#8217;ve looked at seem underwhelming.
