{"id":171,"date":"2006-12-16T22:25:36","date_gmt":"2006-12-17T06:25:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bayesianinvestor.com\/blog\/index.php\/2006\/12\/16\/making-complex-things-from-dna\/"},"modified":"2015-10-08T19:32:57","modified_gmt":"2015-10-09T03:32:57","slug":"making-complex-things-from-dna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bayesianinvestor.com\/blog\/index.php\/2006\/12\/16\/making-complex-things-from-dna\/","title":{"rendered":"Making Complex Things from DNA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had thought that Rothemund&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/bayesianinvestor.com\/blog\/index.php\/2006\/03\/29\/nanotech-breakthrough-stock-price-reaction\/\">DNA origami<\/a> was enough to make this an unusually good year for advances in molecular nanotechnology, but now there are more advances that look possibly as important.<br \/>\nNed Seeman&#8217;s lab has inserted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/cgi\/content\/short\/314\/5805\/1583\">robotic arms<\/a> into specific locations in DNA arrays (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2006\/12\/061207161103.htm\">more here<\/a>) which look like they ought to be able to become independently controllable (they haven&#8217;t yet produced independently controlled arms, but it looks like they&#8217;ve done the hardest steps to get to that result).<br \/>\nErik Winfree&#8217;s lab has built <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/sci;314\/5805\/1585\">logic gates<\/a> out of DNA.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/advancednano.blogspot.com\/2006\/12\/dna-logic-gates-designed-and-created.html\">Brian Wang has more info<\/a> about both reports.<br \/>\nAnd finally, a recent article in Nature alerted me to a not-so-new <a href=\"http:\/\/news-service.stanford.edu\/news\/2003\/november5\/xdna-115.html\">discovery of a DNA variant called xDNA<\/a>, containing an extra benzene ring in one base of each base pair.
