{"id":1060,"date":"2015-03-26T14:50:29","date_gmt":"2015-03-26T22:50:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bayesianinvestor.com\/blog\/?p=1060"},"modified":"2023-02-12T10:02:32","modified_gmt":"2023-02-12T18:02:32","slug":"dietary-zinccopper-ratio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bayesianinvestor.com\/blog\/index.php\/2015\/03\/26\/dietary-zinccopper-ratio\/","title":{"rendered":"Dietary Zinc\/Copper Ratio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve recently noticed that dietary zinc\/copper ratios may be important (e.g. may <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1155\/2013\/586365\">influence Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a>), and that my diet has had ratio which is too low (mine got down below 3 last year, when it should be more like 8 or 10).<\/p>\n<p>The main contributors to lowering the ratio are chocolate, macadamias, and almonds. Each of those seems like a healthy food in moderation (i.e. as many nuts as I&#8217;d be willing to shell manually). But I often overeat them.<\/p>\n<p>Animal products are about the only practical way to improve the ratio. Despite the stereotype of a paleo diet consisting of mostly animals, I&#8217;ve been getting most of my calories from foods that are fairly similar to what hunter-gatherers eat, while eating a below-average amount of animal products. Since that diet gave me more than the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dietary_Reference_Intake\">RDA<\/a> for all nutrients except vitamin D, it seemed unimportant to eat more animals.<\/p>\n<p>Oysters have by far the best zinc\/calorie ratio. I find that adding oyster sauce to a stir fry is nicer than having whole oysters, but many brands have little oyster in them. Lee Kum Kee is a common brand that lists oysters as the first ingredient, so I&#8217;m using that regularly.<\/p>\n<p>Should I take zinc supplements?
